Sliding gates are the most popular choice for villas, residential sites and businesses. There are two main systems: tracked sliding gates that run on a rail fixed to the ground, and cantilever (trackless) gates that move on roller carriages without touching the ground.

Tracked sliding gate

The gate runs on wheels along a rail fixed to the ground. It is simple in design and more affordable.

  • Pros: economical, suitable for heavy gates, quick to install.
  • Watch out for: stones, snow, ice or leaves on the rail can make the gate hard to move. The ground must be level and solid.

Cantilever (trackless) gate

The weight of the gate is carried by roller carriages mounted on a concrete base beside the opening. The gate never touches the ground.

  • Pros: no rail across the opening for easy vehicle and pedestrian access; unaffected by snow, ice and dirt; works on sloping or uneven ground.
  • Watch out for: it needs extra space on the opening side of about half the opening width, and costs more than a tracked gate.

Which should you choose?

If the ground is level and clean and budget is the priority, a tracked gate is a good choice. Where traffic is heavy, winters bring snow and ice, or the ground slopes, a cantilever gate is more comfortable and trouble-free in the long run.

Design and automation

Both systems can be filled with slats, box section, wrought iron or composite and personalised with logo and motif appliqués. Automation such as motors, photocells and remote controls can be fitted to either type.
